Viticulture

The Monterey American Viticultural Area (AVA) is one of Monterey County’s top growing regions, with day-to-night swings of up to 50 degrees producing vibrant, lusciously flavored grapes.

Grapes for Montoya wines were grown in estate vineyards, giving Montoya total control over quality from the time the vines were planted until grapes were harvested. In the 2021 vintage, the grapes come from our Suter and Twin Oaks vineyards. Each vineyard lends the grapes different characteristics, from ripe citrus to tropical flavors.

Vinification

The grapes were harvested during cool night and early morning. 100% free run juice in the final blend and cold fermented in 100% stainless steel with yeasts selected to emphasize grapefruit and tropical notes. The wine was gently filtered and fined prior to bottling.

Tasting notes

Ripe tropical and citrus aromas. Grapefruit, passion fruit, and Meyer lemon flavors burst on the palate framed by bright acidity and a crisp finish.

Pairing

A versatile wine, equally delightful with dishes ranging from oysters on the half-shell to crab cakes; from fish tacos to endive salad with goat cheese.

Raised in San Luis Obispo amidst the blossoming wine region on California’s central coast, Chelsea Laboon has covered all steps of the winemaking process over the decade she’s spent in the wine industry. After earning a B.S. degree from the University of California, Davis, she set out to make wine across the wine regions of California – from producing complex Pinot Noirs of the Santa Ynez Valley to elegant Cabernets in Napa Valley, and balanced Chardonnays in the Santa Cruz mountains.  For Montoya Vineyards, Chelsea’s goal is to create balanced and compelling wines for occasions small and large.
